As a rule of thumb, print the code at least 2 cm × 2 cm for short URLs and 3 cm × 3 cm or more for anything longer. On screens, aim for at least 100–150 pixels per side, more for complex codes. Error correction level matters if the printed QR will get damaged, dirty, or partially covered. Level L (7% recovery) is fine for pristine on-screen use. Level M (15%) is the safe default for most printed contexts. Level Q (25%) or H (30%) are worth using for outdoor signage, product labels, and codes that will incorporate a logo overlay in the centre — the higher levels make the code larger but tolerate real-world damage. Best practice tips: always link to a mobile-friendly page, since 99% of QR scans happen on phones; use a short, memorable URL if the code will be printed at small sizes; test-scan the printed output from multiple distances and lighting conditions before mass production; and add a short text label near the code ("Scan to view menu", "Scan to connect to WiFi") because unlabelled codes get scanned much less often.
